Throughout history, virtually every major civilization has had legends concerning dragons. They are found as far afield as China, India, Ethiopia, and North America and South America. The earliest well-known one is probably the story, in Grecian mythology, of the slaying of the many-headed dragon known as the Hydra, the second of Hercules’ Tasks. In Anglo-Saxon times the aging King Beowulf of the Geats slew a dragon that was terrorizing his lands, but was mortally wounded by the dying beast’s poisonous breath. Norse myth recounts several stories of heroes and dragons; Sigurd and the dragon Fafnir, Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent, which circles the world under the seas, holding its tail in its mouth and Nidhogg, which forever gnaws at the roots of the “World Tree”, the ash tree which supports the Universe.
In Great Britain, of course, we have the tale of St.George and the Dragon. It is said that his heroic deed of laying low this monster so inspired Christian knights that they rode out to slay any dragons that they could find, thus leading to the extinction of this fabulous beast; who knows? Gavin’s Dragon however is somewhat less ferocious than the beasts of legend; it lies at ease, its bronze scales gleaming in the sunlight, keeping a watchful eye on his domain.
