The
latest addition to the Garden of England Sculpture brochure
is a magnificent depiction of ARIEL, from William Shakespeare’s
last play “The Tempest”.
Created by the sculptor Kate Newlyn, it is a beautiful blend
of form and grace, depicting the “ayrie spirit”
at the moment of his release, hence the title of the piece
“Set Me Free”.
In the play Ariel had been enslaved by the witch Sycorax
and imprisoned in a cleft pine tree, where he remained until
freed by the Duke of Milan, the powerful wizard Prospero,
who had been shipwrecked on the island.
Kate Newlyn’s sculpture shows ARIEL, a slightly androgynous
figure, rising into his natural element, the air, with cleverly
draped material supporting the figure so that ARIEL is completely
free from any earthly constraints.
